Pearl Education Guide

Not all pearls are created equal. At CAO JEWELRY, we believe an informed customer is a happy customer. This guide will help you understand the different types of pearls, what makes them valuable, and why the pearls we source are among the finest in the world.

🌊 Types of Pearls

1. Japanese Akoya Pearls

Akoya pearls are the classic pearl — the ones most people picture when they think of pearl jewelry. Cultivated primarily in Japan, they are known for their exceptional luster, perfectly round shape, and crisp, bright white color. Sizes typically range from 6mm to 9mm.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Luster: Very high — mirror-like surface
  • Color: White, cream, with rose or silver overtones
  • Best for: Classic necklaces, earrings, and sets

2. Golden South Sea Pearls

Grown in the warm waters of Indonesia and the Philippines, South Sea pearls are among the largest and most valuable pearls in the world. Their golden color is completely natural — produced by the gold-lipped oyster. Sizes range from 10mm to 20mm.

  • Origin: Indonesia, Philippines
  • Luster: Soft, satiny glow
  • Color: White, silver, golden
  • Best for: Statement pieces, bridal jewelry, investment pieces

3. Tahitian Pearls

Often called “black pearls,” Tahitian pearls are cultivated in French Polynesia. They are the only pearls that are naturally dark, ranging from charcoal grey to deep black with stunning peacock, green, and purple overtones.

  • Origin: French Polynesia (Tahiti)
  • Luster: High, with deep, rich overtones
  • Color: Black, grey, green, peacock
  • Best for: Bold, unique, and contemporary designs

4. Freshwater Pearls

Freshwater pearls are cultivated in lakes and rivers, primarily in China. They come in the widest variety of shapes, sizes, and colors and offer excellent value. Modern freshwater pearls can rival the luster of Akoya pearls.

  • Origin: China
  • Luster: Good to very high
  • Color: White, pink, lavender, peach, and more
  • Best for: Everyday wear, colorful designs, sets

⭐ Understanding Pearl Quality

Pearl quality is assessed using the following factors:

  • Luster — The most important factor. High luster means a bright, sharp reflection on the pearl’s surface.
  • Surface — Fewer blemishes = higher quality. Look for smooth, clean surfaces.
  • Shape — Round is the most prized, but baroque (irregular) shapes have their own unique beauty.
  • Size — Larger pearls are rarer and more valuable.
  • Color — Body color plus overtone. Neither is better — it’s a matter of personal preference.
  • Nacre thickness — Thicker nacre = more durable and lustrous pearl.

🏆 Why Origin Matters

At CAO JEWELRY, we source our pearls directly from trusted farms in Japan, France (French Polynesia), and Indonesia. This means:

  • Full traceability from farm to jewelry
  • Consistent, verified quality
  • No middlemen — better value for you
  • Ethical and sustainable sourcing

📜 IGL Appraisal Certificate

Many of our fine jewelry pieces come with an IGL (International Gemological Laboratories) appraisal certificate. This independent certification confirms the authenticity, quality, and estimated retail value of your piece — giving you complete peace of mind and documentation for insurance purposes.

🔍 Real vs. Imitation Pearls

A simple test: gently rub the pearl against your tooth. Real pearls feel slightly gritty (due to the nacre layers), while imitation pearls feel perfectly smooth. Of course, all CAO JEWELRY pearls are 100% genuine! 😊
